19/02/2025. British American Tobacco (BAT) has announced another important step towards carbon neutrality by signing an agreement to purchase solar energy in Poland. This agreement will provide around 15 GWh of renewable energy annually, covering 30% of the energy needs of the BAT factory in Augustów.

The photovoltaic installation, located in Sadowo in the southwest of Poland, spans 16 hectares and will generate 17.6 GWh of clean energy annually. Under the terms of the long-term agreement, BAT will receive 85% of the energy produced by the installation, marking significant progress in the company’s renewable energy goals.

"Our efforts to increase the share of renewable energy in our operations in Poland are part of global actions aimed at reducing carbon emissions. The photovoltaic farm project in Sadowo is another example of our commitment to minimizing the use of natural resources and achieving climate goals to build A Better Tomorrow™ by Building a Smokeless World," said Jonathan Upward, Group Head of Operations Sustainability & Quality at BAT.

E&C Consultants has supported BAT at every stage of the project, playing a key role in developing the sustainable energy solution by advising BAT on feasibility studies and risk assessments.

"Signing this agreement is a step towards actively participating in the energy transition. We are proud to support our clients at this important stage of the transition to renewable energy sources. Working together on this project is also a step towards a more sustainable future," said Kathleen Peters, Product Owner of Energy Transition at E&C Consultants.

Green energy production set to start in the first quarter of 2025

This agreement supports BAT's sustainability strategy, which aims to reduce emissions by 50% by 2030, in line with the Paris Agreement. The Sadowo project showcases BAT's commitment to leading climate transformation through improved energy efficiency and renewable energy use.

As part of national plans, renewable energy is expected to make up 56% of Poland’s energy mix by 2030. This project will play a key role in reaching that goal, with energy production expected to begin in the first quarter of 2025, strengthening the country's renewable energy infrastructure.

The initiative marks a significant step towards BAT's zero-emissions target, demonstrating the company's commitment to responsible environmental management and reinforcing ESG values in its partnerships.
